A low priced oil change, A free alignment inspection, A free AC inspection, a low priced tire rotation; they are all examples of very common tactics designed to get you in the door. Their intention would be to "up sell" you additional services once they have your vehicle partially disassembled. Often times with high pressure sales tactics.
For you, this tactic has a major problem! They are a business and must make a profit. There will be an expense in the "FREE" item and it's advertising that MUST BE RECOUPED. Quite often they are extremely successful in doing this at your expense. Most often this is done two fold. They "up sell" you additional services that may or may not actually be necessary and they over price the additional services. Sometimes they won't "get you" both ways, but one way or the other the cost of the "free" or discounted service must become profitable or they would go out of business. I personally know of places that can average over $300 in labor alone, not including parts every time they get the car in the door. This makes the low priced oil change quite a bargin....FOR THEM.
HQ Automotive has a different way of doing business. It can be a bit more difficult at times because it doesn't seem to go with the natural order of "the way it's always done", however it is what we believe as a better way for you.
It's a simple concept and I hope you see the value in it as it really does achieve the concept of "lowest overall cost".
We charge you a fair price for a given amount of time or service. You can expect to pay to have your brakes inspected, or to balance your tires, or perform tests to find out why your Check Engine light comes on, etc.
You can also expect honest answers, expert advise, and no incentive to sell you unnecessary services or over inflate the price of additional services to cover the costs.
Common up-sells would include:
shocks/struts
alignments/4 wheel alignment
Engine flush
Fuel Injection flush
Brakes or additional components
Spark plug wires
Steering and Suspension components
other services they may be able to perform at a high profit
They may also give you extra incentive to have these things done by letting you know the service is "on special" or they can "do it right now". They may also play on your fear of not doing it.
There are two important truths for you to consider. 1) They must make a profit (from you) 2) If they got you in the door with a low priced incentive or "free" service, how are they going to achieve a profit?
Just say no thank you and bring your vehicle to HQ Automotive. We will be happy to inspect your vehicle and make any actually needed repairs at a fair price.
